We are all in this world together - I, you, we. A glorious,
heartfelt picture book about being there for one another from
award-winning creators Glenda Millard and Stephen Michael King. 'I
am the small green pea, you are the tender pod, hold me...' A
mother and baby, a boy and a dog run for their lives. A polar bear,
too, has come adrift. When will they find land? Who will welcome
them in? In all the wide world we each need a safe place to call
home. Words sing over the pictures in this evocative story: a
beautiful lullaby about what we can be for each other.
Financial technology (fintech) is the digital delivery of financial
products and services via the Internet or a mobile phone.
Entrepreneurial start-ups, mature businesses, digital-only banks,
and global technology companies are leveraging technology to solve
customer pain points and provide financial solutions that are
cheaper, easier to use, faster, and more convenient than
traditional methods. Fintech Explained provides a rigorous,
accessible introduction to the landscape of fintech. Michael R.
King explains the customer focus, innovation strategy, business
model and valuation of leading fintechs in crypto and decentralized
finance (DeFi), crowdfunding and online lending, robo-advice and
digital wealth management, payments and insurtech, digital banking,
and bigtech. The book profiles the successes and failures of over
thirty high-profile fintechs from North and South America, Europe,
and Asia, including Wealthsimple’s pitch to angel investors, Wise
Financial’s market opportunity in online money transfers,
Nubank’s value proposition as a digital-only bank, and Ant
Group’s multi-sided platform in financial services, among others.
The book combines insights from founders, early-stage investors,
financial incumbents, and other stakeholders in this dynamic
ecosystem. Combining clear descriptions and cases studies with the
latest findings from academic research, Fintech Explained provides
a complete course for educating undergraduate and graduate
students, executives, and interested professionals.

In The Framework of Criminal Justice, originally published in 1981,
the criminal justice process is analysed by using six models, each
of which expresses a different justification for criminal justice
and punishment: the due process model - exacting justice between
equal parties; the crime control model - punishing wrong and
preventing further crime; the bureaucratic model - controlling
crime and criminals; the medical model - rehabilitating offenders;
the status passage model - publicly denouncing the crime and
criminal; and the power model - maintaining domination by the
ruling class and reinforcing class values. The study examines the
formal rules and procedures of the magistrate court system within
the context of these models and also discusses the roles of the
actors (police, defendant, magistrate, court clerks, and lawyers).
Next, the study depicts eight scenes that occur from the
defendant's arrest through a court hearing to sentencing. It
assesses how closely the activity and behaviour within the system
follow the formal protections granted by the British system of
justice, and it concludes that the process is far more complex and
the rules far more open to interpretation than is commonly
believed. The book suggests that this miscalculation has led to the
failure of various reforms - special attention is given to the Bail
Reform Act of 1976 and two sections of the Criminal Law Act of
1977. It further suggests that real reform must depend upon an
understanding of the political nature of the criminal justice
system.
The fifth book in the Kingdom of Silk series. Ages 9+ It's almost
Christmas in Cameron's Creek and it's a time for wishes, big and
small. But Scarlet, the oldest of the Rainbow Girls, is not so sure
if wishes can come true. The kitchen at the Kingdom of Silk is warm
and sweet with the smell of buttery shortbread and steamed plum
puddings. And in the kitchen of the Colour Patch Cafe, Scarlet has
made a new friend, Anik. When Anik tells Scarlet about his home far
away and of all the things he has lost, Scarlet is determined to
make a difference. And so she decides to declare peace on Cameron's
Creek, and maybe even the world ...In Glenda Millard's beautifully
written and multi-award-winning Kingdom of Silk series, we meet the
uncommon Silk family. Parents Ben and Annie Silk have a brood of
five daughters ('the Rainbow Girls'), a son named Griffin,
Griffin's best friend Layla who 'might as well be a Silk' and Nell
- the 'tiny bit magic' fairy grandmother. Through these whimsical,
lyrical stories, Glenda Millard writes about families like no other
writer writes about families. The books explore important themes of
love, loss, friendships, home and belonging, in ways that pull at
the heartstrings but are never over-sentimental. Honey for the
soul. REVIEWS: "These thought-provoking books transport the reader
to a world of friendship and caring; of wanting to make a
difference and believing you can. Scarlet Silk, the eldest of the
Rainbow Girls, has made a new friend, Anik. When Anik tells Scarlet
about the war in his home far away and of all the things he has
lost, Scarlet is determined to make a difference. She decides to
declare peace on Cameron's Creek, and maybe even the world.
Thoughtful and compelling, another excellent book in the series."
-- PARENTS IN TOUCH. "This is a book about making new friends,
finding out if wishes can come true, and discovering that even a
small change is still a step in the right direction. 'Kingdom of
Silk' is a wonderful series for young readers who are just
discovering the joys of independent reading. It has the power to
transport the reader to a land of whimsy and to connect with them
on a deeper level. Plum Puddings and Paper Moons will be read and
loved by readers who have followed the series from the beginning,
and those who have only just discovered it." -- BOOKSELLER
+PUBLISHER. "What a gem! A Christmas story beyond compare ...Highly
recommended." -- MAGPIES. "This book about wishes is a wish in
itself - a wish for a peaceful world where individuals can make a
difference." -- THE AGE.
Intended primarily for undergraduate chemical-engineering students,
this book also includes material which bridges the gap between
undergraduate and graduate requirements. The introduction contains
a listing of the principal types of reactors employed in the
chemical industry, with diagrams and examples of their use. There
is then a brief exploration of the concepts employed in later
sections for modelling and sizing reactors, followed by basic
information on stoichiometry and thermodynamics, and the kinetics
of homogeneous and catalyzed reactions. Subsequent chapters are
devoted to reactor sizing and modelling in some simple situations,
and more detailed coverage of the design and operation of the
principal reactor types.
Moral Agendas for Children's Welfare examines the roles played by
politics, religion, ethics, aesthetics, law and science in
identifying children's needs and rights and critically analyses
existing child welfare policies.
Five sections cover the following Agendas:
* Philosophical and Psychoanalytical
* Psychological and Sociological
* Religious
* Social Policy
* Child Protection.
Moral Agendas for Children's Welfare will provide invaluable
reading for students in law, social work and policy and sociology
and professionals in welfare, health care and law.
By exploring such diverse issues as the management of child abuse,
legal reforms following sex abuse enquiries, moral explanations for
the actions of child murderers, the impossible task faced by social
workers and the limitations of children's rights campaigns, Michael
King examines the revolutionary ideas of the social theorist,
Niklas Luhmann. He demonstrates how Luhmann's theory of
authopoietic systems compels readers to re-examine exactly what
they mean by society.
Questioning the relationship between personal morality and
political will, it challenges the assumption that changing society
is merely a matter of changing attitudes and highlights the
pitfalls associated with formulating social reform.

establishes a hippie commune that rapidly degenerates into an orgy

Meanwhile, in 1996, reporter Jack Wilson (Carl Day) is researching
a story on the cult, and finds himself being stalked by a
latter-day group of Manson devotees.

Moko is written by Michael King, one of New Zealand's most
celebrated historians, and photographed by Marti Friedlander, one
of the country's most eminent photographers. One of New Zealand's
iconic books, originally published in 1972, it was a milestone in
New Zealand publishing. Maori subject matter was not thought to be
of interest to the New Zealand public at that time, and the author
and photographer were relative unknowns - Moko was their first
book. To research this book, King and Friedlander travelled
thousands of kilometres through the hinterland of New Zealand to
find and speak with those who were tattooed, or with people who had
first-hand knowledge of the custom. It is also the story of the
last generation of Maori women who wore the traditional moko. Marti
Friedlander's photographs illustrate with skill and compassion the
moko itself, the women who wore it and the environments in which
they lived.
